A very interesting interview

Today we interviewed Evangelos Kaimakamis via skype. He is a greek doctor who works at the Concordia research base in Antarctica (http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/Concordia). As it is summer now there the temperature is 40 degrees below zero (in the winter it is -80 degrees)!!! Amazing! It made me so big impression along with the fact that the night lasts for four months and then the day for another four months!

Evangelos Kaimakamis has been for almost a year at this isolated, white desert!! What gives him courage to go on is the importance of the scientific work that is being done there. It is definitely a unique experience!

A school social media policy is necessary for every school that uses internet and more specific the social media.

Teachers who use social media in classroom along with the headmaster should form a team that would be responsible for creating one.

* Positive use of social media in education
Social media can be used in education so that students can communicate with each other and with the teachers. Teachers can use them in order to give assignments or additional informations to students. In addition schools can reach out to parents and keep them up-to-date. And of course both teachers and students can use them for the needs of a european project like Comenius.

* Who would you inform about this positive use?
All the teachers, the parents and the students should be informed about this positive use.

* What ways would you use to inform them?
We would organise informative campaigns. We would use posters and open discussions about the subject, where teachers, parents and students would be invited.

* Which ICT organisations cooperate with schools for Internet safety?
Childsafetyonline.net, unicef.gr

* What are the main cultural challenges to the adoptions of social media in school?
The main challenge is to overcome the fears around the social media. Parents and teachers are worried about bullying, about neglecting making the homeworks for the sake of online gaming and many other things.

Teachers of computing who have realise the importance of them.

* What strategies should s/he use to achieve her/his goal?
He should explain the benefits of the proper use, give the students many examples and guide them step by step to their use.
